How Dogs Are Shaping The Future Of Medicine
Learn more about Human Footprint: www.pbs.org/show/human-footprint
For thousands of years, dogs have been our loyal companions, adapting alongside humans in a sensational journey. However, it wasn't until the 1800s that a significant shift occurred when breeding became a competitive sport. The result? A staggering array of nearly 400 dog breeds, each varying in almost every trait imaginable.
Human Footprint host Shane Campbell-Staton meets these posh pooches and unlocks the secrets of the canine code. In this digital episode, we examine how the Westminster Kennel Club played a vital role in preserving and promoting the rich diversity of dog breeds - resulting directly from the hand of human intervention. We unravel how genes and selective breeding shape these remarkable creatures, with some mutations linking dogs and humans more than expected.

How Big Business Broke Recycling (And Blamed You)

But most plastics can’t be recycled and the companies that push for recycling are the ones often generating the most emissions and waste in the first place. Carbon Offsets Don't Work. Here's Why
Переглядів 32 тис.Місяць тому
Individuals, companies and governments “offset” carbon emissions by paying to plant trees or fund solar panels in one place, so they can emit them elsewhere. Carbon credits are exchanged in the open market with the idea that carbon prices will go up - forcing companies to emit less. It is a natural correction due to not needing as much manual labor. If anything, the current population shouldn’t be possible to keep fed, but due to fertilizers and other evolutions from WW1 and WW2, we have had the capability to massively increase the number of people.

You can tell that she isn’t native to the southeast. Instead of global warming (or global cooling or climate change or anything else that has to be made up due to shifting narratives), as an Engineer and also taking a water resource engineering course many years ago, I ponder about the amount of manmade dams that have been developed 50+ years and the effect it has on powering up storms. Other than that and massive housing development that has been drying out lakes and reservoirs as they are placed in locations that shouldn’t have housing development due to lack of natural resources, everything else happens in a cycle.

I don’t agree. Humans are so good at collaboration when there is something important on line. Even more when it could be deadly!! Have a look at soliders. They develop such strong bonds…although there are so many different characters.

Absolutely not. Pregnancy, child-rearing, and mental health are the 3 unspoken barriers to "living in space." Unsurprising that Elon refuses to discuss them, as he's got a dozen kids and has not been at home to raise or see any of them because, as he says, he owns no house and he's been sleeping on the factory floor for his whole career.

Wtf do you mean we're still trying to understand "why" insect numbers are plummeting? It's exactly this kind of failure to communicate clearly that leads so many people to hold insane views about nature, ecology, and climate change especially, knowing that scientists outright refuse to clearly communicate and always hide behind facile "scientific objectivity" or whatever the fuck you'd call this complete and utter lack of media training and totally absence of PR acumen. If you're going to be doing scientific education in a mass market medium, you need to be very clear and, frankly, obviously biased and opinionated about the shit that ya'll obviously have biased opinions about. EVERYBODY knows why insects are dying off, and its the same reason that ecological systems have been collapsing since the 60s: precisely exactly what the hippies and socialists then said, rampant capitalism, climate change, extraction and exploitation, etc. God, the extent to which I wish scientists communicating publicly were forced to be educated in media literacy and PR communication skills is insurmountable. Nothing compares to how insane it is that scientists are left to decide for themselves to maintain this absolutely morally bankrupt take of "we must always pretend to be unbiased and never be influenced subjectively, even though that's impossible, insane, and immoral, because we don't want to hurt the feelings of degenerates that refuse to accept the realities of climate change." Like, what. Get over yourselves. Who the fuck cares if communicating properly causes reactionaries to be reactionary. They're *reactionary,* it's what they do. Stop being cowards and speaks from your goddamn chests, loudly, ffs.

I think before we can get people onto mars we need to improve our communication systems. Putting communication nodes in stable locations for relaying data, and sending data via laser relay may be the solution to a lot of these issues, give a person internet access and they can fall into online rabbit holes for as long as it takes to outlast any wait.

sounds like marriage in the Balkans. just solve the problem with alcohol for the guy. by the way, not true. there are many people in the world who live alone and have nobody. these people have people to rely on (wives, kids, etc.). But take a person who loves being alone, like autistic people, etc. I rather be inside playing videogames than to be with people, because people disappoint me. As with crew, I only need a few people I can socialize with until it becomes "too much". Find THOSE people. They exist.

If we were ready to go to Mars 20 years ago and selected the teams 20 years ago, years in advance with stringent profiling dynamics at the team level I reckon we could get people there and back without killing each other. Today though? At the height of woke? We won't be picking the best people for the job and we won't be picking people that synergize well with each other as part of a team. Every member will be an agenda project. This isn't to say it couldn't still be successful and they all get back alive... But it would definitely be less than optimal.

I count myself as beyond lucky. Running water has always scared me, having grown up in a house built on the site of a gristmill. The millrace had been buried underground several decade did not change the fact that during heavy rains water still used the old millrace. When I found my "new home" the first thing I researched was site elevation. I am 20' off the highest elevation in the county, two miles from the nearest perennial stream and more than 300' and 20 miles from the lowest elevation. I sleep soundly during thunderstorms. I count myself lucky.

It's honestly crazy. My country has adopted a new tax on plastic items. This gave me hope that they would start replacing existing products with less plastic and more biodegradable products... instead they increased prices on all products for consumers, as a plastic tax. Making us pay 10-15ct more for the items which already always had a couple cents for packaging included. Again taxing consumer instead of producer. Since everything comes in plastic these days, you have no choice but to buy it. And I have seen no change in packaging even after a year. Again a problem that has been cleverly displaced.
